Found this soap (on the left) at a boutique in my little town and was pretty shocked by the ingredients, the price, and the size. If someone is willing to pay $12 for a 4 oz bar of soap chock full of difficult-to-pronounce ingredients, I felt encouraged that our all-natural, 5 oz, $7.00 bars might find a market, too!

Let’s talk about lye. It’s an essential ingredient in soap making…and it’s also extremely dangerous if not handled properly. The first photo (top bowl) shows my milk scorched within seconds of adding the lye, even though the milk was sitting in a bowl of ice! Got over 100 degrees instantly! Made my goat milk totally unusable. The bowl on the bottom shows a normal milk and lye mixture.

The second and third photos show my arm where a few granules of lye made contact. Although I washed it off immediately, it burned my skin and stung for hours. Glad I was wearing gloves, or it would have been much worse.

Making soap is a beautiful marriage of science and art and I couldn’t love it more. Just don’t forget your gloves and goggles 🥽
